What is The Connected Self?

What is The Connected Self?

In a hyperconnected world why are we so disconnected from ourselves?

So many shamefully admit that you are deeply lonely despite the constant online and offline “social” interaction. While outwardly composed, you confess you feel confused and internally fragmented. The real you is unknown, overcome by a strong rip current of external expectations and opinions.

From childhood you were given scripts about how to act and think. You were told to “fake it until you make it” so you curated a fake perfect life. Performance is rewarded over presence. You were trained to be addicted to rapid fixes and instant rewards. You were told you are not good enough and so you sought approval from others – parents, teachers, peers, colleagues, and eventually everyone.  It all started with you as being broken and something to fix. You believed it and then became it.

I was once you, engulfed by the current and drifting further from myself. I thought that I only deserved and could only achieve things through effort, struggle, and sacrifice. I trusted that prolonged suffering was good and simple things were not valuable. It is what they want you to think, a brilliantly designed trap. Divide and rule is an age-old strategy for the powers that be to manipulate and control. It is all with one purpose, to weaken collective strength. Us versus Them, You against You. A diver and explorer of ocean beings, as 3-year-old, I learned the only way to survive a rip current is not to swim against it and better yet to avoid it. A lesson I would later apply on dry land to human beings.

The truth is that your connected essence is always present and whole. It is not and cannot be broken. It strives for harmony. It has the innate wisdom and ability to heal you. Your connected self is resourceful; you were born with the necessary tools to be the authentic you without pretending.

For most it is hidden and not accessible. For it to develop, time and not dumping unresolved emotional burdens on a child are necessary. The environment you were immersed in either liberates or constrains you. For most, it is the latter. While the past and the weather are beyond your control, as a grown-up you are now free to choose the place you wish to inhabit, one of personal growth or conformity. Only one choice will cultivate the whole connected you.
